“Milady, your breakfast.” Tristan held out a glass filled with an unappetizing dark green liquid. “It tastes better than it looks, I
promise.”
Â
“Uh, thanks.” Katie took the glass and stared into the smoothie’s swampy green depths. “It looks…very healthy.”
Â
“To the antioxidants?” He held out his own glass in an invitation to toast.
Â
“To the antioxidants.” She clinked her glass against his and drank.
Â
It went down easier than she’d expected. The sweetness of blueberries and the heat of the ginger were most of the taste. Enough of it that she could ignore the underlying grassy notes.
Â
“Not as bad as I thought,” she said as she finished it off.
Â
“Good.” He took the glass from her. “Because I was thinking that to celebrate your new seize the day mentality, we should give Mrs A the night off and have dinner at Lunch?”
Â
“Dinner at Lunch?” Katie asked.
Â
“Also known as The Lobster Roll. It’s the best fried fish place in town.”
Â
“Didn’t we just talk about being healthy?”
Â
“That’s why we’re having our lean green breakfast now, so that we can be bad later.” Tristan leaned across the counter and his voice deepened into a seductive purr. “Walk on the wild side with me. Embrace the empty carbs.”
Â
It ought to have landed on the wrong side of cheesy. But Katie felt the heat rising in her cheeks and the muscles in her belly pulling tight.
Â
Stop that right now, she told herself sternly.
Â
Belly flutters and all other bodily responses to Tristan’s smile, his infectious sense of humor, and his ridiculously handsome face needed to stop immediately.
Â
Katie needed to keep in mind that this was all temporary. The next month with all its Mrs A meals, dinners at Lunch, and green smoothies breakfasts were just work functions in deceptive locations. And even if there was a hint of something more, she shouldn’t be encouraging it.
Â
Just because Tristan was gorgeous and good with words and made her laugh didn’t mean she should forget that he was also the man who’d driven her up a fifteen foot gate and irritated her into jumping.
Â
He was a frog, not a prince.
Â
And there was no way she was going to kiss him.
