Dear Reader,
I had a birthday on Tuesday. As it was one of those sad mid-week birthdays, proper celebration will take place this weekend. In case you were curious, proper celebration is an escape room followed by a lovely long lunch and a couple of yummy cocktails.
Even in pre-pandemic times, I generally didn't do wild birthday blowouts. I prefer to spend one-on-one time with my friends individually. Which also turns my birthday into a week (or month!) long celebration. Which seems only fitting.
I am, after all, ME.
(If you don't get that reference, I rewatched the 80s classic Working Girl recently. I remember loving Melanie Griffith as the spunky Tess the first time I saw it. And Harrison Ford at his snarky best will always be dear to my heart. But this time, it was Sigourney Weaver as the arrogant, self-centered, mildly villainous Katherine Parker who stole the show for me.
She has this killer scene where she's explaining to Melanie Griffith's character that she expects Harrison Ford to propose any day now. Melanie knows he has no such intentions and tries to gently hint that to her oblivious boss.
Tess/Melanie: What if he doesn’t?… pop the question?
Katherine Parker/Sigourney: I really don’t think that’s a variable. We’re in the same city now, I’ve indicated that I’m receptive to an offer, I’ve cleared the month of June…and I am, after all, ME.
The movie industry so often paints women as either saints or victims, it was unexpectedly glorious to see one being a scheming narcissist.)
And now that I've taken you down that unexpected bunny hole, I'm signing off. Keep scrolling down for some exciting audiobook news.
